David’s practice is devoted to business law, advising businesses on organizational structures and a broad range of transactional and contractual matters. David’s practice has a particular focus on advising family owned businesses and entrepreneurs, guiding them through the transition and succession planning process, advising on governance models and shareholder arrangements, on business acquisitions and sales and facilitating and resolving shareholder and partner conflicts and disputes.
David received his undergraduate degree in psychology from York University and his law degree from the University of Toronto. David joined Robins Appleby & Taub LLP in 1981 and served as a member of the firm’s management committee from 1990 to 2006. He is also the firm’s representative in an international lawyers’ network, Legal Netlink Alliance (www.legalnetlink.net)
David is a frequent lecturer at Ryerson University’s Ted Rogers School of Management and Entrepreneurship and has presented at University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management, at Schulich School of Business as well as numerous forums for business owners on transition planning and family enterprise management issues.
David holds a Certificate in Family Business Advising awarded by the internationally recognized Family Firm Institute (FFI). David is a member of the FFI Ontario Chapter Board and its immediate past President (FFI is an international professional membership organization dedicated to understanding and working with family owned businesses and the family wealth field – www.ffi.org). David has also been accepted by the Canadian Association of Family Enterprise (CAFE) into CAFÉ’s Certified Advisory Registry, a registry of qualified professionals from a variety of disciplines with recognized accreditation and/or extensive experience working with business families as professional advisors. David is a member of the Canadian IT Law Association and the Canadian Bar Association. He is also a member of the board of directors of The Canadian Society for the Weizmann Institute of Science.
David and Arlene’s family includes 6 children and a half dozen generally delightful grandchildren.
